Zmarlego balsamuje sie i przebywa on w domu rodzinnym przez 9 dni, zanim nastapi pogrzeb. Taka nowenna, zwana w jezyku cebuano “HAYA,” jest powszechnym zwyczajem na Filipinach. Jak przy wszystkich waznych okazjach, rodzina filipinska zbiera sie cala, natychmiast po smierci kogos bliskiego. Wszyscy czuwaja przy trumnie zmarlego.
Gdy dwa dni temu zmarl nasz sasiad, Mr Efren, natychmiast zjechala sie cala rodzina. Oprocz rodziny, przyszli tez sasiedzi i znajomi. Ludzie przynosili jedzenie, pieniadze i kwiaty. Wszyscy chcieli sie solidaryzowac z rodzina pograzona w zalobie.
Takie czuwanie trwa 24 godziny na dobe. Poza modliwa, rozmawia sie, spiewa piesni, jak i gra sie w szachy czy w karty. Jest przeciez tyle czasu ‘do zabicia.’ Atmosfera, wrecz przeciwnie do tego jak by sie moglo wydawac, nie jest wcale smutna i pelna zadumy. Jest tez poczestunek. Nie powinno byc milczenia. Chodzi jedynie o to, aby zawsze ktos byl przy trumnie zmarlego, i aby dusza nie byla bez modlitwy, gdy przechodzi z zycia ziemskiego do wiecznego. Jest ona w tym czasie szczegolnie narazona na dzialanie zlego ducha. Modlitwa wiec, nieustannie zapalone swiece, swiatla, jak i kadzidlo, sa niezbedne do jej ochrony.
A oto niektore tutejsze wierzenia (tuo-tuo) zwiazane ze smiecia zmarlego w czasie “haya:”
- W tym czasie nie powinno sie sprzatac domu, myc lub obcinac wlosow… to mogloby sie przyczynic do smierci kogos innego.
- Do trumny wklada sie przerwany rozaniec, aby zatrzymac nieprzerwany cien smierci.
- Znaki ktore moga zapowiadac smierc: pies grzebiacy w ziemi; obecnosc czarnej cmy lub motyla; zly sen; specyficzny zapach swiecy.
- Wracajac z porzebu powinno sie wstapic gdzies po drodze (sklep, kawiarnia czy restauracja) aby nie zaprosic smierci prosto do domu.

The month of November and a death of our neighbor encouraged me to write a few lines about a topic of death. The death and mourning have a specific character in the Philippines.
After the death of a person, the body is balsam and kept in the house for 9 days. Such novena is called “HAYA” in Cebuano language. All the members of the family and relatives join the long celebration. They keep awake beside the coffin.
Mr Efren, our good friend and neighbor, died two days ago. All family and neighbors immediately came to his house and they will remain there till the day of his burial. They brought some money, food and flowers. Everybody wanted to express their solidarity and support to the mourning family.
Such wake “haya” continues 24 hours around the clock for 9 days. It is a common custom here. People pray, sing, talk, as well as play chess and carts. All of these in order to keep watching over their friend who just died. His soul must travel now from earthly to eternal life. It is insubstantial and might be easily affected by evil spirit. Need prayer and help. Beside it, it is very advisable to put a lot of candles, lights, incense and to break a silence in the room where the body remains. Everybody who visits the house is very welcome. He will get a meal or snacks, so he can stay longer. There are a few other believes (tuo-tuo) during the time of “haya:”
- The family is prohibited from bathing, cleaning of the house or cutting of hair. To do any of these may cause death to another family member.
- Catholics put a cut rosary into the coffin. It is to break the endless chain of death.
- Mourners must not return home straight from the funeral, as it will bring death into the house. Stopping by a coffee shop, restaurant or a store is usually practiced.
- Omens of death: pet dog continually digging; presence of a black moth or butterfly; bad dream; scent of candles.
