Pare ostatnich tygodni goscilismy w naszym domu misjonarzy z Zamboangi. Al to Brazylijczyk, Szymon i Jan to Polacy. Musieli wyjechac ze swoich parafi, ze wzgledow bezpieczenstwa. Znalezli u nas schronienie.

Region Zamboanga del Sur (ZDS) znany jest z nie stabilnej sytuacji w relacjach chrzescijansko-muzulmanskich. Zdarzaja sie porwania i rozboje. Zwykle powodem tego sa Muzulmanie. Walcza, jak twierdza, o swa niepodleglosc na Filipinach. Maja juz nawet “teretorium niezalezne” w poludniowo-zachodniej czesci wyspy, ale to im nie wystarcza. Chca “pelnej wolnosci.” Chrzescijanie zas chca pokoju. Kto ma racje? Trudno to ocenic. Jedno jest pewne, ofiarami sa najbiedniejsi ludzie, ktorzy nie maja gdzie isc.

Faktem jest, ze muzulmanscy misjonarze byli tu pierwsi. “Moro” (tak nazywali ich Hiszpanie) zostali w czasach kolonialnych wyparci na zachod przez Chrzescijan i zachodnia kulture. Jednak trzeba tez pamietac, ze pierwotnymi wlascicielami tej wielkiej wyspy Mindanao sa tubylcze plemiona filipinskie. Zachowaly sie one w nielicznnych grupach jedynie w daleko oddalonch teranach gorzystych i w lasach.

Jedna z metod walki muzulmanskich rebeliantow jest porywanie misjonarzy i “bialych” mieszkancow tego regionu. Oni bowiem najbardziej kojarza sie z dawnym kolonizatorem (Hiszpania i Ameryka). “Bialy” to rowniez bogaty w ich przekonianiu. Latwiej od niego, lub jego rodziny, wymusic pieniadze, tak potrzebne do zakupu broni i utrzymania rebeliantow. Kazdy "bialy" tutaj musi sie z tym liczyc.

Wyglada na to, ze obecnie sytuacja w ZDS jest spokona i wrocila do normy. Misjonarze wracaja na swoje misje. Tak tu juz bywa od wielu lat, ze czasem jest lepiej a czasem gorzej. Jednak miejscowi Chrzescijanie nigdy nie zostali opuszeni przez misjonarzy. Czasem trzeba na chwile sie wycofac, przeczekac, aby wrocic ponownie jeszcze z wiekszym entuzjazmem. Jeden z naszych sercanow (Beppe Pierantoni) byl nawet porwany i trzymany przez rebeliantow przez 6 miesiecy. Ale nigdy to nas nie zrazilo i przekonalo do rezygnacji.

Wierze, ze bedzie wszystko latwiej, jak ktoregos dnia, miejscowi misjonarze przyjda tu na nasze miejsce. Trzeba jednak jeszcze troche na to poczekac.

Dalczego przyjechales na Filipiny?

Musisz zapytac Pana Boga. Dla mnie to sprawa powolania. Zawsze chcialem pracowac na misjach. Od wielu juz lat wiedzialem, ze moim przeznaczeniem sa Filipiny.

Pracujesz na Filipinach dopero od dwoch lat. Czy trudno ci sie tutaj zaadoptowac?

Trisikat - najpopularniejszy srodek transportu w ZDS

Zawsze nowa kultura, jezyk i inni ludzie wymagaja dostosowania sie i cierpliwosci. Czeba sie tego uczyc. Czasem sprawia to wiele trudnosci. Ale warto to robic.

Wrcasz do “siebie” w Zamboanga. Wiesz, ze rozne opinie kraza o tym regionie. Czasem jest niebezpiecznie, szczegolnie dla bialych. Nie boisz sie?

Nie. Po to przyjechalem na Filipiny, aby sluzyc ludziom. Chce wrocic na moja placowke, gdzie bylem wyznaczony. To moja misja. Bog ma tez swoje plany i wierze, ze On jest ze mna.

Czy podobalo ci sie w Cagayan? Jak tu spedziles dwa miesiace?
Tesknie za moimi przyjaciolmi i parafianami w Zamboanga. Wiedzialem, ze jestem tu tymczasowo. Ufalem, ze ktoregos dnia uda sie wrocic do mojej parafii. Bardzo cieszyly mnie te kilka dni, gdy mialem okazje poslugiwac w Sanktuarium Bozego Milosierdzia, prowadzonym przez polskich marianow. Szczegolna jednak radosc dawala mi posluga w malych gorskich kaplicach i wspolnotach w Dansolihon, naszej sercanskiej misji. Wlasnie tego kontaktu z tymi prostymi ludzmi najbardziej mi brakuje.

There were three missionaries living in our community for a few weeks. Al, from Brazil, Szymon and Jan from Poland. They had to flee away from the parishes in Zamboanga del Sur (ZDS) where they were assigned due to a threat and uncertain situation there. They found shelter and home with us in Cagayan de Oro.

The province of ZDS is known as a place of fighting for domination between Christians and Muslims. The Muslims want freedom and Christians desire peace. In fact, the Muslims already got an independent territory in the south-west of Mindanao. It is not enough for them. They want to win their own country in the Philippines. Who is right? It is difficult to say. For certain, the victims are the poor local people who have nowhere to go.

ZDS: south-west part of Mindanao

Looking back to history, we know that the Muslims missionaries came earlier to Mindanao. “Moro” (name given them by Spanish) took over this island fast. Then, they were pushed away to the south-west by the Christians and Western civilization. They never surrendered. On the other hand, the first habitants of this beautiful island were Philippine tribes. Today, the tribes (lumad) live in the far away, rural areas in the mountains and forest.

One of the ways of fighting for independence is kidnapping of “white” people and missionaries in ZDS. The “white people” remind them Spanish and Americans who were here in the past. Beside the Muslim rebels think that “the white” are rich. They expect good money for ransom. They need it to maintain the arms and support their army. Every foreigner must be aware of it when travel to ZDS.

It seems that the situation is stable now. There are no more threat or fighting in ZDS. Our missionaries can return to their missions and parishes. It has been like that always since our arrival in the Philippines. Sometimes it is better, sometimes worst. Thank God we have been present in Zamboanga, our mission territory entrusted to us, always. We never abandoned and left alone the Christians there. Sometimes the missionaries had to hide. Once, one of us (Beppe Pierantoni) was kidnapped and kept with rebels for 6 months. But we never gave it up. I believe, the situation will improve when our Filipino missionaries will go there and take over our missions, but we still must wait for them.

Below is an interview with Fr Szymon who left Cagayan yesterday and returned to his parish in ZDS:

Why did you come to the Philippines?

You have to ask this question to God. It is matter of my vocation for me. I always wanted to go to the missions. I knew in my heart that my mission is here, long time ago, before I departed for the Philippines.

You have been working in the Philippines for two years. Is it difficult?

New culture, language and people require adjustment. We have to learn it. It is not easy, especially when there is misunderstanding… but it is worthy to do it and it gives me much satisfaction.

You are leaving for Zamboanga now. You know the uncertain situation and the different opinions about this province regarding “peace and order” there. Are you afraid?

Not at all. I wanted to come back to my assignment earlier. I came to the Philippines to serve the people. This is my mission. I believe God knows all, and He will accompany me.

Did you like it here in Cagayan? How did you spend last two months here?

I miss my work, people and friends from Zamboanga. I knew, I would be temporarily here and I would come back. I enjoyed the days that I could go to the chapels and communities in Dansolihon, in the mountains near Cagayan, with simple people there. They reminded me about my work in Zamboanga. I miss it much.
