Koniec.../ The End

Ostatnio wiele słyszałem na temat „końca świata.” Niektórzy mówią o 12-tym grudniu, jako o dniu zagłady, inni, ci co znają cywilizację Majów, mowią o 21-szym grudniu. A jeszcze inni dopuszczają obydwie możliwości, bo obie daty składają sie z liczb 1 i 2. Data „końca” musi być bowiem doskonała: 12.12.2012. Wiele sekt wierzy w te przepowiednie i zachęca swych członków do pozbywania się swoich własności i przygotowania na śmierć.

Liczna tutaj wspolnota chińska uważa, że "koniec" nastąpi w nocy z 12-go na 13-go. I nie jest to zaskoczeniem, ze „13-tka” wchodzi tutaj do gry. Nr 13 jest nieszczęśliwym dla nich numerem. Nikt nie planuje niczego poważnego na „13-go.” Wszyscy unikają czegokolwiek spokrewnionego z nr 13. Nie lubią numerów telefonów, czy tablicy rejstacyjnej, która zawiera „13-tkę.” Hotel czy wysoki budynek zwykle nie ma 13-go piętra, a pokój numer 13 nie istnieje wogóle.

To nie przypadek, że strach przed „końcem czasów” przypada w adwencie. To czas przygotowania na przyjscie Zbawiciela. Pierwsi chrześcijanie byli tego bardzo świadomi i ciągle czekali na Jego przyjście. Wygląda na to, że zupełnie o tym zapomnieliśmy. Adwent to nie tylko czas wyczekiwania na Święta, prezenty i choinkę. Są jeszcze inne ważne aspekty tego błogosławionego czasu wyczekiwania. Przygotowanie na drugie przyjście Chrystusa (Parousia), na śmierć, sąd ostateczny i koniec świata (Eschatologia). Adwent przypomina nam o gotowości na spotkanie z Panem. I dlatego właśnie adwent nie jest dziś popularny. W zasadzie nie istnieje on w świecie marketingu i biznesu. Ludzie chcą obchodzić „Święta,” ale nie pragną spotkać Pana.

Błogosławionego adwentu!

Recently I have heard many stories regarding the ‘end of the world.’ Some say it might happen on Dec 12. According to the others, who follow the Ancient Maya’s prediction, it will fall on Dec 21. Still others believe it will happen either on 12 or 21 as long as it involves 1&2. The date must be perfect: 12.12.2012. Many of the sects advice their members to give their possessions away and close their businesses these days. They take the warning about “the end” very seriously.

Chinese community foresees ‘the end’ during the night on Dec 12/13. No surprise that the number “13” comes in the picture when we talk about the 'end of times.' Number “13” is so unlucky for them. No one will plan anything important on 13^th. Everybody will avoid anything that is connected to # 13. They don’t like a cell # or number plate with “13.” Hotel or tall apartment built by Chinese usually don’t have floor # 13. Certainly there is no room # 13 there.

It is not a coincident that the fear of “the end” occurs during Advent. It is a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. The first Christians were very much aware of it. We tend to forget it. Advent isn’t just a time of joyful waiting for Christmas, Santa Clouse, gifts and better food. There are also other aspects of this blessed season that remind us about second coming of Jesus (Parousia) as well as about death, last judgment and the end of the world (Eschatology). Advent encourages us every year to be ready to meet the Lord. It might happen anytime. That’s why Advent is not popular in modern society. It doesn’t exist in the commercial world. People want to ‘celebrate Christmas’ but they don’t want to meet the Lord.
