Filipinskie zwyczaje – 4 / Filipino Customs

Ten post jak i kilka nastepnych, to kontynuacja rozdzialu: “ABC dla przyjezdzajacych na Filipiny.” Chcialem sie w nim podzielic moimi spostrzezeniami z pobytu w tym ciekawym, ale bardzo roznym od Polski kraju. Juz prawie 10 lat minelo jak przyjechalem na Filipiny. To co jest opisane ponizej pochodzi z mojego wlasnego doswiadczenia i obserwacji. Wiekszosc jest napisana w nutce humoru i zartu. Mimo ze, nie wszystko bylo takie radosne w momencie nauki, to pozostawilo wiele madrosci i milych wspomnien. Nauka nowego jezyka, jak i obcej kultury rozwija i uczy szacunku dla czlowieka. To wspaniala lekcja zycia i inspiracja do bycia lepszym.

This post, and a few others, tells about customs and some elements of Filipino culture. The topics include behavior, greetings and expressions of the local people in the Philippines, and their ways of doing things in ordinary life and feasts… all of it is very interesting and sometimes is completely very different in comparison my Polish culture. What is written below is a fruit of my observation and experience in this exotic country that I have lived and learned for almost 10 years. It is written with a sense of humor. Although, sometimes it was painful to learn things by mistakes, yet now, it reminds me pleasant memories and much wisdom. Learning a new culture and a language helped me to respect others and their diversity. It is a good encouragement to become more human.

Walka kogutow / Cockfight

Walka kogutow (sabong) jest bardzo popularna na Filipinach. Kazdy wolny dzien, niedziela czy fiesta jest okazja do takich zawodow. Sabong nie jest tylko zwykla zabawa czy gra. To rowniez show i zawody przeznaczona tylko dla chlopcow i mezczyzn, na ktore nalezy sie odpowiednio przygotowac. “Sabong” jest okazja do zaprezentowania swoich zdolnosci trenerskich oraz mozliwosc pokazania swojej wyzszosci w stosunku do kolegow i sasiadow.
Ktos trafnie zauwazyl, ze “w razie pozaru, pinoy,  ratuje swojego koguta pierw, a potem dopiero rodzine i inne rzeczy z domu.” I rzeczywiscie troche prawdy w tym jest. Pinoy spedza wiele czasu na wychodowanie, pielegnacje i przygotowanie swojego koguta do zawodow. Wybiera odpowiednie miejsce na domek i najlepsze jedzenie dla niego. Potem trenuje go zaprawia do walki. Zwycieski kogut w walkach “sabong” moze przyniesc wlascicielowi duze pieniadze i slawe. Przegranego zas, zabitego lub poranionego, zabiera sie do domu i robi sie z niego obiad. Taki posilek po przegranej bitwie nazywa sie “talunan,” czyli uczta przegranego.
Mimo, ze wielu sprzeciwia sie walkom kogucim jako nie humanitarnemu hazardowi, zwyczaj ten pozostaje bardzo popularny i jest praktykowany w calym kraju. Nie trudno zauwazac, ze kazde miasteczko w tym kraju ma zawsze dwa budynki: kosciol i “sabungan,” czyli miejsce do walki koguciej. Ludzie potocznie nazywaja je “Sportowa arena.”

Cockfight (sabong) is very popular in the Philippines. On every given day of the week throughout the year, in almost all parts of the country, hundreds of roosters are encouraged to fight. Sabong is more than just a popular betting game especially for man and boys. It is a show, opportunity for a competition with their classmates or neighbors, and style of life that requires a lot of preparation.

It is said that “in a fire Pinoy will rescue his fighting cock before his family and possessions...” In fact, he will spend a lot of time to grow his rooster and train for many weeks. He will choose a special food and conditions for him. There are also special houses and gyms for roosters. A champion, winner cock, can bring to the owner a lot of money and honor among his friends and neighbors. An owner of a looser, in contrary, takes his dead or injured rooster home and cooks it in a special dish called “talunan,” meaning loser’s banquet.

The cockfight remains popular despise efforts to eliminate it as unproductive gambling vice, cruel to animals. There are two building you are sure to find in almost every town in the Philippines: a church and a “sabungan” (cockpit). People usually call it: “Sport Arena.”

Koszykowka / Basketball

Koszykowka jest najbardziej popularnym sportem na Filipinach. Ludzie lubia ta gre praktykowac, jak i ogladac. Nikt sie tez temu nie dziwi, ze najlepsi gracze wybierani sa na politykow, mimo, ze nie maja wiele wspolnego z polityka. Albo, niektorzy gracze wystepuja w filmach lub serialach telewizyjnych, mimo, ze nie maja zdolnosci aktorskich. Ludzie poprostu ich uwielbiaja. Kazdy maly chlopiec chcialby byc pofesjonalnym “graczem w kosza” i grac w zawodowej lidze. Filipinska Liga Basketball-u (PBA) jest druga najstarsza liga po amerykanskiej NBA. Wielka pasja i milosc do tej gry jest widoczna wszedzie, a “boisko do kosza” mozna znlezc nawet w najbardziej oddalonych gorskich wioskach, tzw. “barrio.”

Na Filipinach nawet Jezus gra w kosza. A oto popularne plakaty i figurki dla mlodziezy z Jezusem  grajacym w koszykowke:

Filipinos’ favorite pastime is playing and watching basketball games. It comes as no surprise that the most popular basketball player was voted to the Senate even if he had no previous experience in politics. Some basketball players without acting competency have several films and TV shows to their credit. Anyone who can shoot hoops well is immediately admired by people here. Almost every single boy regardless of his height desires to make it in the professional basketball league (PBA). This league is second oldest league after American NBA. Because of this passion to the ballgame, a basketball court can be found even in the most remote villages (barrio).
In the Philippines even Jesus plays basketball. Above are two examples of popular posters and statues with Jesus. Young people like Jesus as a basketball player.
